Since the stories developed over a 5 year period, the correct reading order is 5, 2, 1, 3, 4. (Most of the world building is in Vol 1)
Maybe next time I’ll plan it out better, but that’s unlikely.
Vol 1 - Beyond Luna
Vol 2 - A Back Story

Vol 4 - BosonsWave^2

Behind The Now Time Travel, but not like that
With five volumes complete, H2LiftShips is less accurately described as a traditional space-opera series than as a speculative future history. The adventure plots provide momentum, but the deeper project is to explore how transportation systems, economics, biotechnology, and engineering decisions interact over generations to create a believable spacefaring civilization.
The recurring emphasis on logistics, infrastructure, and unintended technological consequences distinguishes the series from many military-focused space operas. Freeman's willingness to interrupt the narrative with engineering discussions remains a defining stylistic choice, reinforcing his stated goal of writing "a tech manual for a future" rather than a conventional action novel.
